Kamen Rider Drive (仮面ライダードライブKamen Raidā Doraibu) is a Japanese tokusatsu television series serving as the 16th HeiseiKamen Rider Series, and 25th series over all. Riku Sanjo returns to the Kamen Rider Series to serve as Drive's lead screenwriter, with Ryuta Tasaki as director. It premiered on TV Asahi and affiliate stations throughout Japan on October 5, 2014, the week following the finale of its preceding series Kamen Rider Gaim, and joining Ressha Sentai ToQger then Shuriken Sentai Ninninger in the Super Hero Time programming block, until Drive concluded on September 27, 2015. Drive is peculiar among the heroes in the Kamen Rider franchise, as his motif and main mode of transportation is a car, rather than the signature motorcycles used by his predecessors.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]

Story[edit]
Kamen Rider Drive, in his default Type Speed form, and his car Tridoron.
Shinnosuke Tomari is a former elite police officer in the Metropolitan Police, who, after an event that crippled one of his colleagues, has been 'demoted' into the Special Investigations Division. This division looks into the stranger happenings in the city, particularly the recent 'Density Shift' events. These events, termed 'Slowdown' by the public, leave people unable to move. When he is chosen by the Drive Driver and Tridoron, Shinnosuke transforms into Kamen Rider Drive and is tasked with battling the Roidmudes who plan to rise against humanity and take over the world. He is aided by Kiriko Shijima and her brother Go, who transforms into Kamen Rider Mach. Chase, a special Roidmude with a strange past who was then known as Proto Drive and later became an evil warrior known as Machine Chaser, also reassumes his Rider identity and reclaims his 'justice' to protect humanity as he transforms into Kamen Rider Chaser. However, a greater threat later appears in the form of Kiriko and Go's father, Tenjuro Banno, the scientist who created the Roidmudes, who despite having long lost his human body, revives in the form of the evil Gold Drive, intending to make use of the remaining Roidmudes in his own plan to bring down the whole world at his mercy.
Production and development[edit]
The series marks the first time that a Kamen Rider's main vehicle is a car rather than a motorcycle, which has been remarked upon by entertainment news as a shock and a major change from previous Kamen Rider television series.[1][3][5][6]

Story[edit]
Takeru Tenkūji, whose father was a ghost hunter who died 10 years earlier, dies at the hands of an evil monster known as a Gamma (眼魔Ganma, Eye Demon) while trying to protect his childhood friend Akari Tsukimura from an attack. A mysterious hermit brings Takeru back to life and bestows upon him the Ghost Driver transformation belt and a Ghost Eyecon (ゴースト眼魂Gōsuto Aikon, Ghost Eye Soul), an orb-shaped device which can see ghostly creatures like spirits of dead creatures, Gamma, and other Riders. The hermit tells Takeru that he has 99 days to gather 15 additional heroic Eyecons in order to be brought back to life permanently, and must fight the Gamma as Kamen Rider Ghost to obtain them. He is assisted by the Buddhist monk Onari, who previously supported his father as a ghost hunter, and Akari, who tries to find more scientific and logical reasons behind their supernatural encounters. In his way are Makoto Fukami, a mysterious living young man capable of utilizing a Ghost Driver to transform into Kamen Rider Specter (仮面ライダースペクターKamen Raidā Supekutā), and the Gamma led by Chikara Saionji, an associate of Takeru's late father, and Alain, the son of the Gamma leader, who later acquires the means to transform into the anti-hero Kamen Rider Necrom (仮面ライダーネクロムKamen Raidā Nekuromu).
The Riders of Kamen Rider Ghost use Eyecons to transform and summon the hooded jacket-like spirits called Hoodie Ghosts (パーカーゴーストPākā Gōsuto) like the spirits of historical figures such as Miyamoto Musashi, Thomas Edison, Tutankhamun and Isaac Newton to grant them new powers.[1]
Casting and production[edit]
Kamen Rider Ooo Flash Driver
Shun Nishime is the lead actor of Kamen Rider Ghost, portraying the hero Takeru Tenkūji. At only 17 years old, he is one of the youngest actors to portray the leading role in a Kamen Rider Series, coming after Masaki Suda from Kamen Rider W who was 16 at the time of filming and tying with Takeru Satoh from Kamen Rider Den-O. The rest of the cast includes female lead Hikaru Ohsawa, the rival Kamen Rider Ryosuke Yamamoto, Takayuki Yanagi, Yoshiyuki Morishita, Hayato Isomura, and Naoto Takenaka.[2]
Japanese rock band Kishidan performs the television series' opening theme song. When Kishidan's involvement was announced, lead singer Show Ayanocozey joked that he was very worried about writing the song, but consulted with Takashi Niigaki on how to write songs about ghosts.[3]
Episodes[edit]
Much like some of Gaim's earlier episodes, the episode titles for this season are all in the form of a exclamatory sentences, with the first one being exactly two kanji long much like Kuuga's episodes.
